$1.3 Million For Napoleon's Wife Hunter Case Watch

Napoleon Bonaparte's Wife Watch

An anonymous buyer walked away with the famous and historic, 18K gold, enamel and diamond-set hunter case ‘petite souscription à tact’ watch that belonged to Empress Josephine, wife of French ruler Napoleon Bonaparte. The buyer paid an astounding sum of $1.3 million at the Christie’s auction in Geneva, which is seven-fold its estimated pre-auction price.

The watch is a replica of the ‘montre a tact’ or ‘tactile watch’ pattern designed by Abraham Louis Breguet in 1790, when it was inappropriate to ask for time in public. The USP of the watch is its very ability to enable wearer identify time by its mere feel from outside as the watch hand resides outside.

The watch was inscribed with an ‘H’ initial after it was given to Hortense, wife of Napoleon’s brother Joseph Bonparte, who went to become the Queen of Holland after Napoleon placed his brother as King in 1806.via

Now, another diamond studded clutch, the Lana Marks Cleopatra Clutch, designed by Lana J. Marks that worth $250,000. The Lana Marks Cleopatra Clutch was made of 776 individually cut and set diamonds on an 18k yellow gold frame and was inspired by a royal tiara, incorporating scrolls, garlands, and collets with a coronation inspired crown.

This diamond studded handbag was worn by an Oscar nominee for best actress, Helen Mirren. She was acutely aware that she was holding a $250,000 diamond studded clutch from Lana Marks as she walked up to the podium to accept her Oscar award.

"Here I am with my purse..." Mirren said upon taking the podium to accept her award.

Because the demand for the LANA MARKS Diamond Cleopatra Clutch is so great, starting in 2004, only one actress has been granted permission to carry the $100,000 handbag down the Academy Awards Red Carpet.

In 2004, Academy Award Winner for Best Actress Charlize Theron wore a $100,000 Lana Marks Cleopatra Clutch on the Red Carpet; in 2005 Best Actress Nominee Kate Winslet carried a $100,000 Deco Cleopatra Clutch; and in 2006, fashion icon Jennifer Aniston wore a Cleopatra Clutch.

$16.2 Million for the Magnificent and Unique Stone

An 84.37-carat white diamond touted by Sotheby's for its size and beauty sold at auction to Guess clothing company founder Georges Marciano for just under $16.2 million.

The jewel — the largest top-quality, brilliant-cut white diamond ever to appear at auction — had been valued by Sotheby's at between $13.3 million and $17.8 million.

Marciano's winning bid, made by telephone, came to $16,189,769 including the buyer's premium. It was just short of the all-time auction record for a stone or piece of jewelry, a record held by the same Sotheby's branch in Geneva for a 100.1-carat diamond that fetched $16.5 million in 1995.

"In my 32-year career, this stone ranks among the most beautiful diamonds I have ever seen," said David Bennett, the auction house's chairman of jewelry for Europe and the Middle East. He called it a "magnificent and unique stone."

The diamond has received the highest possible grading, Sotheby's said. It is D-color, or finest white, has flawless clarity, and its cut, polish and symmetry have all been graded excellent, it said.

The New York-based company is hoping the "Magnificent Jewels" sale at Geneva's historic Beau Rivage hotel will help it bounce back from the disheartening results of its Impressionist and Modern Art auction, which sent its stock tumbling.

The sale last week fetched $269.7 million, well short of estimates, and led some analysts to speculate whether the flight from risk currently gripping financial markets may be spilling over into the art world...via

A Perfect Templar Cross Discovered in a Miraculous Diamond

Miraculous Diamond with a Perfect Templar Cross

Rarely in the history of man do miracles occur that everyone can see to be true. But here for all to witness is the phenomenon of the Templar Diamond. A beautiful creation of nature, this incredible brilliant diamond is almost 3 carats in weight and a natural greenish color. At the center of this gift of the universe is a spectacular cross.

It was a perfect unilateral cross, totally natural and magnificent! The beautiful cross was positioned exactly in the center of the diamond. A cross that is a replica of the symbol of the Templar knights from the first crusades of 1096.

The Templar knights were entrusted with the mission of defending the Holy Land and protecting the Holy Grail. The Grail was said to be the cup that contained the blood of Christ. The knights believed that he who drank from it would have eternal life. To be the defenders of the land and keepers of the Grail was an immense responsibility indeed, but one that they gave their lives to fulfill. The Templars were instrumental with the successes of the Crusades. They were easily recognizable because of their white mantels emblazoned with the unique stylized cross.

The knights were the bravest and best warriors in battle, but they were also responsible for creating the first economic infrastructure. This infrastructure resulted in the earliest form of banking and created economic stability in the medieval world. The Templars represented an amazing balance of unfathomable courage in battle and incredible foresight for the preservation and development of civilized society...via

Orloff Diamond: The World's Third Largest Cut Diamond

The Orloff diamond was the worlds third largest cut diamond weighs 194 carats. It was 300 carats when found, slightly bluish green in color and has a clarity of exceptionally pure.

This gem may be found in the Diamond Treasury of Russia in Moscow. There are so many historical episodes involving the Orloff. First, it may have been set at one time as the diamond eye of Vishnu's idol (one of the Hindu Gods) in the innermost sanctuary temple in Sriangam, before being stolen in the 1700s by a French deserter. However, the deserter just dug one eye from its socket, because he was terror-stricken at the thought of retribution, so he couldn't take the other.

The time passed, the stone arrived at Amsterdam where the Russian count Grigori Orloff, an ex-lover of Empress Catherine the Great was residing. He heard about rumors of the stone, and he bought the diamond for 90,000 pounds and took it back to Russia for Catherine's favor. The stone has been called the Orloff since then. Catherine received his gift and had it mounted in the Imperial Sceptre. She gave a marble palace to Grigori in exchange for the Orloff.

The Biggest Diamond: A Diamond Bigger than Earth was Discovered in Constellation Centaurus

Like an episode out of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, The Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics has announced the discovery of a mass of crystallized carbon formerly known as star BPM 37093, now known as the biggest diamond in the galaxy, fifty light years away from Earth in the constellation Centaurus.

The star, named "Lucy" after the Beatles song, "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," is estimated to be 2,500 miles across and weighs approximately 10 billion-trillion-trillion-carats – a one, followed by 34 zeros. Travis Metcalfe, an astronomer from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and leader of the team who discovered the gem, says “You would need a jeweler’s loupe the size of the sun to grade this diamond. Bill Gates and Donald Trump together couldn’t begin to afford it.”

The diamond is actually the crystallized interior of a white dwarf – or the hot core of a star that is left over after the star uses up its nuclear fuel and dies. It is made mostly of carbon and is coated by a thin layer of hydrogen and helium gases.

Five billion years from now, our sun will die and become a white dwarf. Approximately two billion years after that, its ember core will crystallize as well, leaving a giant diamond in the center of our solar system. A paper announcing this discovery has been submitted to The Astrophysical Journal Letters for publication. The Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics is a joint collaboration between the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and the Harvard College Observatory. Scientists within the organization are classified into six research divisions where they study the origin, evolution and ultimate fate of the universe. via
